How to be Confident
Confidence is something that comes as a result of positive feelings of self-worth, plus the realization that you are actually a valid human being. Invariably, some people are born with amazing levels of confidence and they sail through life with the firm belief that they are the best thing since sliced bread. But for many people, self confidence comes with age, plus the life experience to recognize that the superficial traits we desire when we are young, such as a pretty face and a slim figure, really do not matter all that much as we grow older.
Self confidence issues can sometimes be as a result of a toxic relationship with somebody who exploits your feelings of insecurity for their own personal gain. If you think this might describe your current relationship, then it is important to recognize this is going on and take steps to deal with it. Staying with somebody who constantly puts you down is unhealthy, so do not allow yourself to be a victim. If this scenario describes ALL of your significant personal relationships, it might be time to consider seeking professional help to explore the underlying issues that are causing you to form relationships with such individuals.
A lack of self confidence is often inextricably linked with feelings of insecurity. Any feelings of insecurity that make you question yourself worth is likely to eat away at your self confidence. We all have different insecurities: some people are sensitive about their weight, whereas others struggle with other demons.
Insecurities manifest themselves in different ways. For some people, a lack of self confidence will lead to chronic shyness and an inability to communicate with strangers. This can cause problems on many levels and the person will often appear to be standoffish and taciturn in social situations. Other people with self confidence issues try to bolster their lack of self worth by using alcohol or drugs as an emotional crutch in difficult situations. This type of person can often appear to be loud and obnoxious, but the reality is usually very different.
The good news is that self confidence is a skill that can be learned. In order to be truly comfortable in your own skin, you have to learn to love yourself, warts and all. Once you recognize that nobody is perfect, you are on the road to improving your feelings of self worth and banishing those pesky insecurities once and for all.
One important way of boosting your self confidence is by focusing on all the positive things in your life. That might include your personal relationships, or it might be a special skill you have. Everybody has talents, including you. Your talent does not have to be something amazing such as the ability to run a sub-3 hour marathon; it can be something simple, such as the ability to listen and empathies with other people’s problems.
If you can identify the things you are good at, you can learn to take credit for your successes and gain a feeling of accomplishment every time you achieve something new. It is often helpful to make the effort to try new activities and interests. Simply by forcing yourself to do something different can often give you more confidence, plus it is a great opportunity to meet new people with similar interests.
A lack of self confidence in the workplace can be disastrous. If you find it difficult to put yourself forward in meetings and always shrink to the back of the room, you will soon find your career stagnating. It doesn’t matter how many great ideas you might have, if you don’t have the self confidence to express them, nobody will ever know.
It can often help to try simple methods of bolstering self confidence. If you lack confidence because of your looks, try changing something. Try restyling your hair or dress in a different way. Sometimes a new look can make all the difference. Remind yourself every single day that you are a wonderful person and when somebody pays you a compliment-believe them! Faking it can also work. If you pretend to be a confident person, you might find that eventually life imitates art and you ARE a confident person!
