USING ICEBREAKERS & OPENERS

It is common practice for trainers to begin their class with either ice-breakers or openers. Some trainers may use the old and somewhat boring techniques of everyone standing and introducing themselves or pairing people up and letting them introduce their partner. The problem with these methods are that the put people on the spot, make them feel uncomfortable, they may forget names and other info so in the end the atmosphere created is uneasy. We want to spark interest and curiosity amongst the participants. Ice-breakers are used to ease the tension amongst strangers letting them become familiar with each other. They are fun, include all and create a buzz, excitement. Ideas for icebreakers can be found quite readily in bookshops or on the net; write down the ones that appeal most to you as trainer and record how they can be used concerning topics and audiences. Openers are activities which are related to the program; they involve everyone as well but also create the mindset for the class.
