CONNECTING WITH YOUNGER PARTICIPANTS

The working industry is having a greater influx of the younger generations. These can be divided into two groups. The “Generation X” born during 1965-1978 and the “Gen Yers” born after 1978. These ones are often perceived to be know-it-alls, have attitude, disrespectful and lazy but this is not the case. They are the new age generation, their methods of learning are very diverse and technology orientate. They are young, energetic, optimistic, and confident and focus on obtaining the highest achievements. They are able to digest larger amounts of information but prefer it to be delivered in a concise format, straight to the point. They thrive in group environments where they can challenge and be challenged. They do not just accept answers; they want to know the why and the how. Immediate and meaningful answers are the key so as a trainer always be prepared to be able to support your claims with facts and figures. Make sure to include self-study and projects outside class time. Encourage them to use their creativity. They enjoy exploring different avenues to finding solutions so be sure to make use of workbooks, videos, sound bites and other visual aids. Most important keep the learning process fun, entertaining and at a faster pace.
